Additional notes on 1 Delphini

  • 1 Delphini was discovered to be a double star in 1872 by S.W. Burnham using his 6" Alvan Clark refractor, and reported in the Astronomical Register (Ref. 1). He estimated the separation to be not much more than 0.5". It was listed in his catalogue of double stars (Ref. 2). As a stable emission-line shell star, 1 Delphini is important for modelling disk formation in Be stars (Ref. 3). Today, 1 Delphini is recognized as a triple visual system. Data for all three components can be found in Reference 4.

  3. Carbon star LEE 144 (TYC 1092-0551-1). These interesting stars have so much carbon convecting to their surface layers that the oxygen normally available to produce metallic oxides (eg. titanium oxide in M-class stars) is used up by the formation of carbon monoxide and dioxide. Carbon will even combine with itself to form wide C2 bands in the stellar spectra, blocking out most of the blue light and making these stars appear quite red. See Reference 1, Table 1 for LEE 144 data.
